Depending on the general health of your teeth and the level of infection, your hygienist will recommend the most appropriate treatment. The mildest stage of gum disease, gingivitis, is usually controlled with a comprehensive cleaning and more frequent dental cleanings.
As gum disease progresses, it becomes periodontitis. During scaling and root planing, we remove bacteria and smooth out rough areas on the root surfaces of your teeth so bacteria can’t collect.
In order to wash away any remaining bacteria and give your mouth a fresh start, your hygienist will irrigate the affected area with an antibacterial rinse. Our recommendation is that you schedule your next appointment in a few weeks so we can monitor the situation. To stay ahead of the disease, more frequent cleanings may be necessary in the future.
